On April 19, 1999, Virginia Garner swallowed capsules of an experimental drug now known as Gleevec and became one of the first few people to take an effective dose of this miracle drug that would change not only the history of chronic myelogenous leukemia, but the history of cancer as a whole.
Even as Virginia was swallowing her first pills, melanoma was surging through the body of her husband Van. On October 1, 2001, it announced itself in the form of a tumor on his head. Like Virginia’s diagnosis, Van’s was terminal. Though he would fend off this nemesis with multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, the experimental drug Ipilimumab, and radiation, he would be part of a continuing drama in which death and salvation vied for the final word.
In the midst of their treatments, Van and Virginia began running marathons. They entered races not only to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the fight against cancer, but also to prove to themselves that they were simply still alive.
In this book, Virginia and Van Garner describe their thirteen-year struggle with and triumph over terminal cancers. Together they chronicle the suffering, struggles to survive, research, and decision-making process that led them to the doctors and cutting-edge science that saved them.
Over the thirteen years that the Garners endured, there have been tremendous advances in the development of target drugs and immunotherapy. Unlike their doctors, the Garners are not being considered for Nobel Prizes, but they won the grand prize They got to live.

An inspiring story of persistence and determination. This couple has touched the hearts and lives of many persons. They are devoted to each other and to the causes they support. An amazing example of enduring whatever life may throw your way.
A must-read. The Garners' book presents their struggles, joys, trials, and celebrations with the raw emotion that gives the reader a unique insight into their experiences with cancer. In a truly spellbinding way, this book accounts their impressive strength, determination, and grit. I was left with a renewed outlook on my own life.
These two amazing people have survived the most devastating effects that cancer and its treatmentst can wreak on a person - in this case, two persons, husband and wife. That they not only survived, but through much of their ordeals - and now for years after - have been running marathons to raise money for cancer, should be both humbling and an inspiration for the rest of us.
I read it through in one sitting, with a box of tissues close by.
This is truly a story of hope, survival and love. While this book was very informative and it taught me a lot about what it takes to endure and triumph over a disease, what touched me most was the intense love that Van and Virginia Garner share. Even when things seemed insurmountable, it was their love for each other that carried them through, and that is what I found most inspiring about this book the power of love. Amazing book!
Gripping, amazing, and at times hard to comprehend this couples battle to survive. God has kept them alive through scientific breakthroughs and it's a wonderful thing. Stay well.
